Cardiac Stress Testing for Heart Health Evaluation

Detect heart conditions early with comprehensive exercise stress tests and diagnostic cardiac screenings. Our experienced cardiologists and primary care physicians provide accurate heart health assessments to help you stay proactive about your cardiovascular wellness.

Why Cardiac Stress Testing Matters

The Importance of Heart Stress Tests

A stress test, also known as an exercise tolerance test, is a crucial diagnostic tool that evaluates how your heart performs under physical exertion. This test helps cardiologists and primary care physicians identify heart conditions that may not be apparent during rest.

During the test, you'll walk on a treadmill or ride a stationary bike while we monitor your heart rate, blood pressure, and electrocardiogram (ECG/EKG). This helps detect coronary artery disease, arrhythmias, and other cardiovascular conditions early.

Who Should Get a Stress Test?

Cardiac stress testing is recommended for individuals with certain risk factors or symptoms. Your doctor may order a stress test if you:

  • Experience chest pain or discomfort during physical activity
  • Have shortness of breath with exertion
  • Have diabetes or high blood pressure (cardiovascular risk factors)
  • Have a family history of heart disease
  • Need exercise clearance for surgery or fitness programs
  • Are over 40 with multiple risk factors for heart disease
Types of Stress Tests

Understanding Different Cardiac Stress Tests

We offer several types of heart stress tests to evaluate your cardiovascular health. Your cardiologist will recommend the most appropriate test based on your symptoms and medical history.

Exercise Stress Test (EST)

The standard treadmill stress test monitors your heart while you walk on a moving belt or ride a stationary bike. You'll start slowly and the speed and incline will gradually increase. Throughout the test, we track your heart rhythm, blood pressure, and symptoms.

This test typically lasts 10-15 minutes and is excellent for detecting coronary artery blockages and exercise-induced arrhythmias.

  • Non-invasive and quick
  • Evaluates exercise capacity
  • Detects abnormal heart rhythms
  • Identifies coronary artery disease

Nuclear Stress Test

Also called a myocardial perfusion scan, this advanced test uses a small amount of radioactive tracer to create images of your heart muscle. It shows blood flow to your heart both at rest and during stress, revealing areas with reduced blood supply.

This test is more detailed than a standard exercise stress test and can pinpoint the exact location and severity of heart blockages.

  • More detailed imaging
  • Precise blockage location
  • Evaluates heart muscle function
  • Superior diagnostic accuracy

Stress Echocardiogram

A stress echo combines ultrasound imaging with exercise or medication-induced stress. Before and after exercise, technicians take ultrasound images of your heart to assess how well the heart muscle pumps blood and how it responds to exertion.

This test is particularly useful for evaluating heart valve function and detecting areas of the heart that may be weakened or damaged.

  • Real-time heart imaging
  • Valve function assessment
  • No radiation exposure
  • Measures ejection fraction

Pharmacological Stress Test

For patients unable to exercise adequately, we offer a medication-induced stress test. Medications like adenosine or dobutamine simulate the effects of exercise on your heart, allowing us to evaluate cardiac function even without physical exertion.

This option is ideal for those with arthritis, lung disease, or other conditions that limit physical activity.

  • For patients with mobility limits
  • Safe and controlled stress
  • Accurate diagnostic results
  • Can combine with imaging
The Stress Test Experience

What Happens During Your Stress Test?

Understanding the cardiac stress testing process can help ease any anxiety. Here's what you can expect during your heart stress test at our New Jersey clinic.

1

Preparation

Avoid caffeine 24 hours before and don't eat for 3-4 hours prior. Wear comfortable clothes and walking shoes.

2

Baseline Recording

Electrodes are placed on your chest to record an EKG/ECG at rest. Your blood pressure is also measured.

3

Exercise Phase

You'll walk on a treadmill, gradually increasing speed and incline. We continuously monitor your heart rhythm and symptoms.

4

Recovery & Results

After exercise, we monitor your heart as it returns to baseline. Your cardiologist will discuss preliminary findings.

How Long Does a Stress Test Take?

A typical exercise stress test takes about 30-45 minutes total, including preparation and recovery time. The actual exercise portion usually lasts 10-15 minutes. Nuclear stress tests may take longer due to imaging requirements.
